Here Today - My Favourite McCartney Song
May 24, 2008 by nowhere man
Well *maybe* my favourite.
I have always loved the rare personal lyrics from Paul in this 1982 track. It was written in the aftermath of John’s passing.
It is a delightful song, with very emotional lyrics….notably lines like:
“What about the night we cried,
Because there wasn’t any reason left to keep it all inside.”
“We were in Key West in 1964,” Paul says. “We were due to fly into Jacksonville, in Florida, and do a concert there, but we’d been diverted because of a hurricane. We stayed there for a couple of days, not knowing what to do except, like, drink. I remember drinking way too much, and having one of those talking-to-the-toilet bowl evenings. It was during that night, when we’d all stayed up way too late, and we got so pissed that we ended up crying - about, you know, how wonderful we were, and how much we loved each other, even though we’d never said anything. It was a good one: you never say anything like that. Especially if you’re a Northern Man.”
Hey Will,
Long time no read! Been thinkin’ bout you and thought I’d check in. Cool post about this song. I never heard McCartney’s explanation of that line before. It’s cool to hear snippets of them “just being four guys hanging out”.
Anyway, I hope you’re doing well and I hope to hear back from you one of these days.
John
John, it’s so fantastic to see you again (and get your email addy).
I really have to start uploading a lot more content to this site.
Yes, it’s great to hear Paul talking about how the four guys spent their time when they had some unexpected free days. And it’s pretty unlike Paul to mention graphical things like “talking to the toilet bowl”
All my best as always.
Will
